Botanic Gardens hosts Guangzhou twinning celebration

The University of Bristol’s Botanic Gardens was the venue for our latest celebration of 25 years of partnership with sister city Guangzhou.

Councillor Yassin Mohamud, Lord Mayor of Bristol, and John McWilliams, director of civic and alumni engagement at the University of Bristol, were among the guests at the afternoon celebration, which featured a guided tour of the Chinese Medicinal Garden with Ching-Hei, the opportunity to admire Amelia Gardner’s exhibition of boats in the Guangzhou Garden, and a breakdance performance by Seba Morales, who recently performed in Guangzhou.

The evening reception included an update from Councillor Henry Michallat, Deputy Lord Mayor of Bristol, on his recent visit to Guangzhou, where he attended the launch of the University of Bristol-HKUST (Hong Kong University of Science and Technology) partnership.

Richard Lowe, director of business initiatives at Bristol & West of England China Bureau, also shared insights into the forthcoming Technology and Advanced Manufacturing Mission to the Greater Bay Area – Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong – which is taking place from 23rd-27th November.

The event took place just a few days after a top-level delegation from Guangzhou visited Bristol to meet members of the city’s business, political and academic community.

Dianne Francombe OBE, chief executive of Bristol & West of England China Bureau, said: “This is a truly momentous occasion for Bristol and Guangzhou and the past 25 years of collaboration have delivered so much for the two cities.

“We look forward to the next 25 years of engagement and to strengthening ties with Guangzhou and our partners in the Greater Bay area.”
