South Bristol’s own music artist is roaring back this summer with a new name, a new EP and a headlining solo appearance at the city’s Ethical Life Festival next weekend.

Kala Chng is the new performing name for Knowle West favourite Makala Cheung, Bristol’s half Chinese Singer/Songwriter/Producer who has cut a prominent figure on the city’s music scene over the past decade.

Known for her powerful and creative performances blending Pop and R&B to Dubstep, Breaks & Bass and electrified by her jaggedly melodic Chinese overtones, Kala is back on stage at the Viva!City Bristol Ethical Life Festival this Saturday July 14 and at the Bristol Thai Festival on Sunday July 29.

She said: “Everyone's asking me why I have a new artist name. I always wanted to release as Kala Cheung, after all my friends do call me Kala, but there were other Kala Cheungs out there.

“But I decided on the change to mark my 10th year as a solo artist and seventh year releasing music.

“I've had fun hearing people trying to pronounce Chng – but you just say 'Kayla Chung'.”

Kala will also be releasing a new EP Knowle West Girl at Knowle West Fest this September.

In addition to multiple musical roles, Kala is also an Ambassador with the Bristol and West of England China Bureau, which has supported previous performances and videos.

Dianne Francombe said: “Kala goes from strength to strength and has forged a place for herself on the Bristol music scene – this is all down to her personality and attitude – clearly the Chinese trait of hard work and perseverance has paid off.

“Kala has done a lot to show how the Chinese sounds can influence western music and as a cultural ambassador she is an inspiration to others.”
