A visit by officials from up and coming Chinese province, Hunan, marks an increasing cooperation between the two countries with the intention to boost tourism between Hunan and the UK.

The scheduled tour to the UK capital included a whistle-stop visit to the City of Bristol, which comes at a time of deepening economic co-operation between the Chinese province, roughly the size of the UK & with a population of 73 million, and the South West. Mr Chen Xianchun, Director General of Tourism Development Commission of Hunan Province, met with experts in tourism, business, and media from Bristol, to discuss opportunities in the region.

“By building partnerships in the South West, we will help to expose Hunan province to more people in the West whilst also presenting the city of Bristol and its surrounding areas to residents of Hunan.” said Mr Chen Xianchun speaking on behalf of the delegation.

In attendance was CEO and founder of Bristol based digital marketing consultancy Make it China,  and  the Bristol & West of England China Bureau’s representative for Hunan Dennis Hu. Hailing from Hunan himself, Dennis’ agency works with a number of scenic spots in the province, including Tianmen Mountain and Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, helping to promote them both online and offline to Western tourists and the media.

Also at the delegation meeting was CEO of Destination Bristol, John Hirst, whose company have helped develop the tourism economy in the city; Jonathan Smith, China Market Specialist at Business West; and Nicky Robertson, Managing Director of Bristol based video communications agency, Mendip Media. “It’s not often we get to welcome such a high-ranking delegation to Bristol,” said Business West spokesperson Jonathon Smith, “We are building on our visit to Hunan earlier this year and believe this link will generate huge returns for the area.”

Later expanding on the Tourism Development Commission of Hunan Province’s meeting in Bristol, Mr Chen Xianchun said, “We are ready to work together with the South West and we are certain that these partnerships will offer more opportunities for us to promote Experience Tourism in Hunan province.”

The visit concluded in London with the much anticipated ‘Splendid Hunan’, event at the Copthorne Tara hotel in Kensington, promoting Experience Tourism in the province. Amongst the special guests were Commercial Partnerships Manager at Visit Britain, Claire Elsden; China Market Business Advisor for the China Britain Business Council, Chris Lethbridge; and General Manager for the UK of Hainan Airlines, Yang Jiuzhou.

The Splendid Hunan event began on August 6th with an opening speech by Mr Chen Xianchun, who introduced Hunan Province and what it has to offer Western tourists. Guests took in a range of talks, including a presentation by Willow Hu, Marketing Director and co-founder of Make it China, who delivered an insightful talk on the highlights of Hunan Province on behalf of the Tourism Development Commission.

Also speaking at the event was adventurer and writer Leon McCarron, who recently visited Hunan to explore potential opportunities in Zhangjiajie. “The landscapes of Zhangjiajie speak for themselves” said Leon, who spoke about his time visiting the area and local people.

In honour of the new direct Hainain Airlines flight between London Heathrow and Changsha, Hunan, two lucky guests took home a prize of return tickets on the route. With Hunan boasting the UNESCO world heritage site of Zhangjiajie, whose magnificent scenery inspired the block buster movie Avatar, it was a chance for this province to show off its natural and cultural wonders to a British audience. The successful event recognised the exciting province of Hunan and what it can offer UK tourists seeking unique experiences.
